We're supporting the Down East AIDS Network (DEAN) in their observance. 100% Society invites you to "light to unite"
The Transgender Day of Remembrance was set aside to memorialize those who were killed due to anti-transgender hatred or prejudice. The event is held in November to honor Rita Hester, whose murder in 1998 kicked off the "Remembering Our Dead" web project and a San Francisco candlelight vigil in 1999. Since then, the event has grown to encompass memorials in dozens of cities across the world." Machias, ME was one of those cities. The 100% Society originally planned a candle light vigil and we attempted to light the labyrinth in front of Powers Hall, but as it was too windy for the sheltered candles to stay stay lit, the observance was held inside. Twenty-six people were in attendance to memorialize transgendered individuals and to think of their loved ones. We took turns reading listed names and afterward we discussed these sad and violent acts.
October is GLBT History Month. Please view the Equality Forum website below to see the achievements of 31 gay, lesbian, bisexual or transgender icons. Each day a new video will be available. Also make sure to visit the archives for the 62 icons honored for 2007 and 2006. Be surprised! Be educated!
