Distance Learning - The UMM Calais Center

The Calais Center of the University of Maine at Machias provides bachelor-level courses and programs for Washington County Community College graduates and the people of the St. Croix Valley. We invite you to build on your previous education from Washington College Community College or elsewhere. UMM courses and programs, as well as distance offerings from across the state, are available. We offer flexibility in course delivery and scheduling.

Students who are currently attending WCCC can seamlessly transition to a four-year program at UMM by taking courses for a Bachelor's degree before they even finish their A.A. at WCCC. Please see the details of the Calais-Machias Connection Pre-Matriculation program.

The following UMM Bachelor of Science programs are closely coordinated with degrees from WCCC:

Modes of course delivery:

  • Traditional On-site: The Calais Center offers traditional classroom–based courses in a variety of areas, fitting the educational goals of our students
  • Interactive Television (ITV): Course delivered via ITV are broadcast from one of seven campuses of the University of Maine System and received at more than 70 sites and centers around the state, including the Calais Center. All classes are delivered in “real time.” A student will watch the class on the TV and can use the phone to ask questions or make comments. All classes are taped and a student can come in and watch the tape if they missed a class. ITV classes usually have an online component to them.
  • Video-Conferencing (VC): VC is a two-way audio and video connection among the instructor and all the students across the sites used for the course.
  • Online: Courses delivered online will generally be either on Blackboard or WebCT. These courses provide a great flexibility for the student, but the student must be disciplined to succeed within this delivery mode.
