Learning that Fits Your Needs
Whether you want to being a degree program, jump-start your career or just learn something new, the University of Maine at Machias has what you need. Our Distance Education courses are:
Accessible
The UMaine Machias Distance Education program works to remove barriers between you and college coursework by offering many courses each semester for those who can't make it to campus. This format allows us to serve students unable to travel to campus or with time constraints that make the traditional classroom experience difficult.
High Quality
UMaine Machias offers quality distance education courses that are popular with students. Instructors are well-recognized in their fields, and are often working or doing research in their fields, providing a more diverse teaching and learning experience.
Affordable
UMaine Machias offers quality courses at an exceptional value. Tuition is less than $200 per credit hour for in-state students. When you consider the support you get from a nearby campus and faculty and advisors that are friendly and accessible, you will see that UMM is the place for you.
Varied
UMaine Machias offers distance education courses via:
- Interactive Television (ITV)
- Compressed video (CV)
- Asynchronous Transfer Mode (ATM)
- Internet
Students taking these courses can expect a media-rich learning experience that will meet and often exceed their expectations in both content and presentation.

Community-Minded
Distance education students are an important part of the UMaine Machias community. We strive to make all students feel as comfortable as those graduating from UMM. The same campus student resources available to on-campus students are available to distance education students as well. The University of Maine System Distance Education program ("University College") provides additional academic and technical range of support.
Coordinated
Courses and programs are often meshed with courses offered by other University of Maine System campuses. In addition to a wide array of courses, UMaine Machias offers several degree programs that can be completed entirely at a distance. For example, in the fall 2005 semester, UMaine Machias began offering a program in special education available entirely through distance education.
