The UMM campus enjoys a location on the rugged coast of Downeast Maine, a setting that has long inspired poets, writers, and artists. In keeping with this tradition, the English Program offers a solid education in the appreciation and practice of the literary arts in an atmosphere of unrushed creativity and independence.
The Program centers around the book as cultural object. Core courses include the history of the book, book arts, and publishing. Beyond this, students choose from three concentrations: one focusing on more traditional literary studies; another emphasizing
creative writing; and a third (the newest addition to the program) in Book Arts. In all three tracks a student can take a wide range of courses including American, British, and world literature courses covering a variety of genres (novel, poetry, short story, film), a well-designed selection of writing and techniques courses in fiction, poetry, creative nonfiction, and screenwriting, as well as an exciting array of courses in the Book Arts.
In the senior capstone sequence in Writing and Publishing, students engage in the actual publication and production of a book by a Maine author, through the UMM Press. Publication of the book involves students in every aspect of the publication process including editing, book design, printing, binding, cover design, advertising, marketing, and distribution.
