Kimball Hall from 1:00 to 2:00. The event is a part of Banned Books Week, a national celebration of the First Amendment in the book and library world.

All members of the UMM Community are invited to attend the event, read from their own favorite banned books, and listen to other readers. There will be a selection of banned books available both in the Merrill Library and at the event itself. The event is free to all.

Master printmaker, papermaker, environmentalist, and organic gardener to visit FIA 103 First year experience art students at UMM.

Susan Mackin Dolan lives and works in Avon, Colorado. In addition to her own artistic activities, she is a Professor of Drawing, Printmaking and Papermaking, at the Colorado Mountain College. She is also co- manager of a not for profit gifted education advocacy group.

She has an MFA in printmaking and papermaking from the University of Colorado at Boulder and a BS in Art Education from the University of Maine.

Practicing environmentally safe printmaking techniques similar to what we are doing in the book arts studio at UMM, her prints are hand drawn on acetate, exposed onto photo polymer plates, developed with water, then printed like a traditional etching. Her subject matter includes plant forms coupled with figurative elements. In the artist's own words: "The subject matter is symbolic in nature and refers to different levels of human experience, especially those on the subconscious level. They sometimes suggest the presence of forces beyond the individual and explore the relationship between natural phenomenon and one's ability (or inability) to conform them to our own wants and desires."

She has exhibited nationally and has given workshops at various universities and conferences. She has been published in Hand Papermaking, a journal of artistic endeavors in the papermaking medium.

Angelenos Doug Billings and Tracy Garner are about to get married. Two days before the wedding, the four men in the wedding party - Doug, Doug's two best buddies Phil Wenneck and Stu Price, and Tracy's brother Alan Garner - hop into Tracy's father's beloved Mercedes convertible for a 24-hour stag party to Las Vegas. Phil, a married high school teacher, has the same maturity level as his students when he's with his pals. Stu, a dentist, is worried about everything, especially what his controlling girlfriend Melissa thinks. Because she disapproves of traditional male bonding rituals, Stu has to lie to her about the stag, he telling her that they are going on a wine tasting tour in the Napa Valley. Regardless, he intends on eventually marrying her, against the advice and wishes of his friends. And Alan seems to be unaware of what are considered the social graces of the western world. The morning after their arrival in Las Vegas, they awaken in their hotel suite each with the worst hangover. None remembers what happened in the past twelve or so hours. The suite is in shambles. And certain things are in the suite that shouldn't be, and certain things that should be in the suite are missing. Probably the most important in the latter category is Doug. As Phil, Stu and Alan try to find Doug using only what little pieces of information they have at hand, they go on a journey of discovery of how certain things got into the suite and what happened to the missing items. However they are on a race for time as if they can't find Doug in the next few hours, they are going to have to explain to Tracy why they are not yet back in Los Angeles. And even worse, they may not find Doug at all before the wedding.

Operation Wallacea is a series of biological and conservation management research programmes that operate in remote locations across the world. These expeditions are designed with specific wildlife conservation aims in mind - from identifying areas needing protection, through to implementing and assessing conservation management programmes.

What is different about Operation Wallacea is that large teams of university academics who are specialists in various aspects of biodiversity or social and economic studies are concentrated at
the target study sites giving volunteers the opportunity of working on a range of projects. The surveys result in a large number of publications in peer-reviewed journals each year,
have resulted in 30 vertebrate species new to science being discovered, 4 'extinct' species being re-discovered and $2 million levered from funding agencies to set up best practice
management examples at the study sites. These large survey teams of academics and volunteers that are funded independently of normal academic sources have enabled large temporal and spatial biodiversity and socio-economic data sets
to be produced, and provide information to help with organising effective conservation management programmes. The expeditions are now operating in 7 countries: Indonesia, Honduras, Egypt, Cuba, South Africa, Mozambique and Peru.

Froese, a professor of English at UMM, will read from his latest book, *The Origins of Misgiving*. Kirkus Discoveries calls Froese’s new book, “A darkly compelling version of the strangeness of everyday life.”

In addition to *The Origins of Misgiving*, he has written three other novels – *The Hour of Blue* (1990), *The Forgotten Condition of Things* (2001), and *A Dark Music* (2006).

Froese, who teaches creative writing and film at UMM, is a founding member of the Flatbay Collective, a group of local artists who support and inspire each other’s work. More information can be found at www.flatbaycollective.org. He lives on Flat Bay in the solar-powered home he
and his wife, Leonore Hildebrandt, built themselves.

*Thursday, September 24 – Alan Lewis*, Professor of Ecology at UMM, will present on UMM’s organic campus garden.

*Thursday, October 15 – William Otto*, Associate Professor of Chemistry at UMM, will present the results of UMM’s recent greenhouse gas inventory.

*Thursday, November 5 – Henry Chausse*, Director of the Machias Bay Area Transfer Station, will discuss area waste management and new recycling
initiatives.

*Thursday, December 3 – Chad Everett* will present on home energy audits and how community members can make their homes more energy efficient.

UMM’s Green Council is a student organization whose mission is to promote,encourage, and educate on issues concerning environmentalism and
sustainability on the UMM campus and within the community.

All presentations will take place at 5:00 p.m. in the Faculty Dining Room of Kilburn Commons. Audience members are welcome to purchase dinner at the dining commons at a reduced price. For more information, contact Green Council advisor Meghan Duff at (207) 255-1227.

Michael's likable, innocent persona allows audiences to really appreciate the simple humor in their own lives . . . and also to laugh a lot. Michael has performed at clubs and colleges all around the country including the World Famous Improv and having trained at The Second City in Chicago, can be found on the sketch comedy circuit.
