Summer at UMM

Spend part of your summer in our spectacular Maine setting and learn something at the same time by taking advantage of our UMM summer learning opportunities.
The University is pleased to offer a broad range of educational activities for the summer of 2009. We are hosting both “live” (face-to-face in the classroom) and online courses, as well as an exciting series of children’s camps. The Sunrise Senior College provides a broad curriculum over the summer for older learners.
Live and Online Coursework

Brian Beal will once again lead students along the shores of Washington County to study Local Marine Life and Alan Lewis will offer Intro to Trees and Wildflowers of Maine as students explore Maine’s natural resources in the downeast area.

Alan Wittenberg, Certified Music Therapist, will teach music-based therapeutic approaches for elementary and special education, music education and the fields of psychology and social work in his course Music as Therapy: Body Mind and Spirit.
Asynchronous courses, which require online computer access – available on the UMM campus – cover a broad range of interests.
Cultural Anthropology courses will be offered July 6 to August 14.
Shallee Page will introduce students to the study of therapeutic drugs in his online course Pharmacology and Pharmacokinetics, lectures (held Monday through Friday, May 18-July 2, 1:00-3:45 pm) will be available online.
Several courses for managers, business leaders and others interested in the field of business are Business Communications, Labor Management Relations, and Leadership and the Entrepreneur.
Many courses are offered for teachers and some specifically for recertification: Teaching, Learning and Technology, Evaluation in the Classroom, Dimensions of Exceptionality, and others.
Psychology courses include Intro to Psychology, Forensic and Criminal Psychology, and others that address psychology of terrorism, gender, personality, and industrial and organizational institutions. Sociology courses are also offered in several areas.

MESSY: The Machias Environmental Summer Session for Youth

July 19 - 24
MESSY is a one week, residential camp for students in grades 7-9. It is designed to educate youth about the environmental challenges we face today, to stimulate young people to actively and creatively design solutions to those challenges, and to help them become better stewards of our natural resources.
Students will spend half of each day immersed in a curriculum to accomplish these goals, and a couple of hours each day studying one of two minors: Creative Writing and Paper Making or Marine Science. MESSY students will also have the opportunity to participate in a variety of recreational and sports activities ranging from basketball to swimming to ultimate frisbee.
Tuition: $585 per camper

Summer Art Camps
Make—Create—Imagine Art Camps at UMM are offered for age groups 6 – 8 years and 9 – 12 years. Classes are held from 9:30 a.m. – 12:00 p.m. Monday through Friday.
Enrollment is limited to 10 students per class. Cost for each class is $65 for UMM faculty, staff and students, and $70 for general public.
